In February, OpenAI released an update to its ChatGPT system, dubbed Memory. With the help of this function, ChatGPT may store questions, suggestions, and customized changes for a longer period of time. Memories were first available to a limited number of users, but OpenAI has recently made them available to ChatGPT Plus subscribers outside of Korea and Europe.

Memory uses two different mechanisms to personalize ChatGPT’s responses, which improves the conversational experience. Firstly, users can tell ChatGPT to remember things for future chats. Secondly, it learns from similar talks to be smarter and more responsive, like other modern algorithms. This brings ChatGPT closer to its goal of being a smart AI assistant that understands user preferences without constant reminders.

OpenAI introduces memory feature

Recently, OpenAI explained a significant improvement in memory capabilities in a blog post. ChatGPT now provides users with more transparency and control over the retention process by alerting them when memories are modified, in contrast to its previous version. Users can manage and filter the data that ChatGPT stores, and they may even remove unwanted information from its database.

To demonstrate the usefulness of memory, let’s look at some examples of how people have used it to make different kinds of work easier.

For example, ChatGPT actively helps those who prefer structured meeting notes, which include headlines, bullet points, and summarized action items at the end. ChatGPT encodes this option into its memory, providing users with customized meeting summaries tailored to their preferences.

Similarly, ChatGPT’s mnemonic features have helped entrepreneurs who need help creating interesting material for social media. Users who own a local coffee shop can easily come up with ideas for promotional articles honoring new business openings by telling ChatGPT about it.

Furthermore, ChatGPT has proven to be an invaluable creative collaborator for parents who want to personalize important occasions. Users who mention a child’s love of jellyfish receive thoughtful suggestions, like adding a jellyfish pattern to birthday card designs.

Memory has been adopted by educators as a pedagogical tool, increasing the effectiveness of lesson planning. ChatGPT assists teachers in crafting personalized lesson plans. It considers factors such as teaching style and classroom dynamics. It gathers opinions on lesson lengths and post-activity activities. OpenAI has enhanced ChatGPT’s memory during ongoing conversations. Yet they recognize its limitation to live sessions.

Nonetheless, the firm remains dedicated to improving and developing Memory’s features. In the near future, it intends to make memory available to ChatGPT Enterprise and Teams subscribers, in addition to bespoke GPTs on the GPT Store.

OpenAI hasn’t revealed why they excluded European and Korean markets from the initial memory launch. Nevertheless, they commit to advancing conversational AI, emphasizing the importance of memory in enhancing user experiences and boosting productivity in human-AI interactions.
